Versailles is more than
a palace surrounded with beautiful gardens. It also has a huge
park where one can discover two small castles named Grand and
Petit Trianons, former summer residences for the Kings .
One option is to take the mini-train (
yes they are popping up with increasing frequency in tourists
areas) down to the two summer palaces. One is allowed to get off
at any stop, and re-board a later train.
The highlight is the gardens around the
Petit Trianon ( see picture on the left) - you feel as if you have
entered a different time zone! Their beauty is stunning. If the
queue to the main Palace backs up to the main gate, I would
consider foregoing the palace and spending a whole day in the
majestic gardens.
